After persevering through a series of setbacks, the fledgling Radio Newark could hit local airwaves as early as February.
The community radio station recently reached a tentative deal with the University of Delaware to install a 51-foot antenna on the STAR Campus. The transmitter will be located toward the back of the property, formerly the Chrysler assembly plant, near some maintenance buildings.
The site is the third proposed location and though the first two didn’t work out, founder Steve Worden is confident the antenna will be installed by the FCC-imposed deadline of Feb. 7. He needs to raise $5,000 by then in order to pay for installation costs.
Do we really need another radio station ? Yes indeed this one! I had a chat with Steve and his radio station is designed for the community.
It’s different from Old Radio in that it is wild and free. No scripts, no advertisers, no need to reach the masses. I want the fringe. I want the top end and no more. I want the brightest, smartest, most fascinating people to be ON the station and listening as well.
Well I guess I fit into the fascinating group 🙂 However, Radio Newark would be a great sounding board for some of our brightest and smartest folks who hang around blogs, Facebook and Twitter. Such as Dana Garrett, Steve Newton, Nancy Willing, John Young. Mike Matthews and many many more Delaware intellectuals. Steve Warden also wants school-age kids engagement. I think our views as a community is as wide as radio spectrum wavelengths. Steve mentioned that individuals or groups could send him podcasts to review and select from. And I am sure, he’ll have folks over for live on-air conversation. I would love to see former Delaware Talk Radio host Mike Matthews back behind a mic. Mike did an outstanding job at that radio gig! Yep he was crazy enough to have Kilroy join him! Then there is OMG I can’t tell jokes Rick Jensen! Rick is the only radio guy I know that gets his rocks off report traffic! One of these days I am going to call in the Jensen Show and dog him! Be like old time! I was never tempted to drop the F-bomb on Rick’s show but came close on John Rago’s Show back in the day with WDEL. Anyhow, I think Steve Worden’s Wizu 99.9 FM will compliment social media and restriction for profit Radio!
Steve says this, ” It’s different from Old Radio in that it is wild and free. No scripts, no advertisers, no need to reach the masses. I want the fringe. I want the top end and no more. I want the brightest, smartest, most fascinating people to be ON the station and listening as well.” He’s got that right ! The fringe! The list of folks I mentioned above are on the fringe and they stop things coming our way long before mainstream media. We don’t wait ! We keep our radar on and bounced on the unwelcome!
It turns out that a horde is not too many, when you are talking about PARTICIPATORY Radio.
No lie. If you’ve got a good story to tell, we’ll help you. Sign up here. If you want to vet and edit other’s work, sign up here. Maybe you want to TEACH broadcasting to seniors — sign up here.
Really, there are SO MANY WAYS to help our little homegrown radio station. You can represent us at community events. Search out and identify new content. Write and record stories. Work with others to record and produce THEIR stories. Create bumper music, announcements, and station imaging…
You have ideas of your own. BRING THEM. We want to hear from you. Seriously.
Yo gang ! check out this! Steve Worden is the real deal !!!
Most recently we have been favored by the Broadcasting Board of Governors — the ‘parent company’ of the Radio Liberty, Radio Free Europe, Radio Marti, and the Voice of America.
Yes! New material covering science, news, and international affairs will be coming our way. In addition to the VOA News Now programs currently being heard, we will be adding Voice of America science, news, and international affairs segments within our normal ‘short attention span’ format.
(Format? What format…?! A friend once told me, “Your station is the only one that surprises me. I never know what will be coming next!”)
You better not hope its Kilroy coming next 🙂 LOL
You know ! I’ll bet Steve Worden would love to have some podcasts from Mike Matthews students. Discussing current events or just what it like being a kid! We adults keep “improving” education with our ideas but very seldom ask young student’s for their items on how to improve public education.
