Will Red Clay require Conrad’s alumni to remove offensive school artifacts and not display “red skins” on school property

No doubt Red Clay’s school board will vote the committee’s recommendation which will put an end to Conrad “Redskins” and any references to it on school property or district property. The hard question will be, will the district impose rules on the Conrad alumni barring them from referencing “Redskins” on Conrad during school sporting events as a participant on field activities such as alumni band or cheerleaders.  Maybe not at first but the issue will come up! After the board makes their official vote they’ll be required to make an official district policy and here’s where the it will get tough!

So you can bet the farm the board will put an end to the Redskin question. However, will it be an end to Conrad’s school logo? The logo isn’t offensive and doesn’t represent Redskin!

To the alumni; I am with you and feel for you. You will not save “Redskin” ! However, you must save the logo! Without that logo “your” Conrad is GONE! If the district ask for you continue support you’ll be a fool to accommodate. The Conrad Alumni is a brotherhood and sisterhood of “people” and will continue. With taking the school logo away the district and board will disenfranchise from Conrad.

As far as discrimination, look at Conrad’s all choice enrollment policy! Children living around Conrad must apply via Choice because, Conrad is not a feeder school even to those students who can see it through their bedroom windows. They change Conrad to an all choice from a feeder school to purge minorities living along Maryland Ave and Alban Park. Those student’s feeder-pattern we’re changed to Skyline, A.I. and Stanton. Red Clay’s way of trimming the tribe! Conrad should be a feeder school to comply with the intent of the neighborhood schools act aka law. Making good with local Indian tribes is beautiful. However, closing a neighborhood school to at-risk black children who can’t meet the Conrad entrance test is immoral and an injustice.

The Smithsonian historian actually refers to indians of Delaware and their vermillion dyed skin color.

” Based on this source, the OLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY suggests the term was specifically applied to the Delaware Indians and “referred not to the natural skin color of the Delaware, but to their use of vermilion face paint and body paint.”[9] Smithsonian liguistics scholar

    Ives Goddard

A third controversial etymological claim is that the term emerged from the practice of paying a bounty for Indians, and that “redskin” refers to the bloody, red scalp a proclamation against the Penobscot Indians in 1755 issued by King George II of Great Britain, known commonly as the

    Phips Proclamation.[20][21] The proclamation orders

    No bloody scalp mentioned.

“His Majesty’s subjects to Embrace all opportunities of pursuing, captivating, killing and Destroying all and every of the aforesaid Indians.”

      Sue,

I think the PC train is pulling out of the station. As Steve Newton said, words change meaning over time. My mother’s friend used to lament every year at the holidays that she could no longer toast the gay holiday season without being snickered at. Change happens.

I do think that the PC train should pull all of the freight it seems to have confiscated. Take along not only the name Redskins but also take along the logo and take away the name of the school since the eponymous educator was a man of his time in the late 19th and early 20th century who worked hard all of his life to be sure that education was equal — and separate. Change happens.

We can be very inspirational if we would just check public opinion with more polls and then contract and average name/logo/mascot from those polls. Here is one: Boxwood Academy for the Applied Sciences. The mascot can be a pruned “boxwood” bush. The logo can be a a “boxwood” topiary shaped like the school building and nicknamed ” ‘Ole Boxy”. Now — that certainly can’t disrespect anyone other than Naturalists agains Shubbery Prunining. Or people who think that ” ‘Ole” is disrespecting ‘Ole Miss. Isn’t this future state inspirational? Change happens. No matter how senseless, it always has an advocate somewhere..

  3. I wouldn’t classify it as a minimal charge. That aside, what the news today shows is that the rumors that followed this incident were just that – entirely false. No stabbing. No weapons.

    • John,
If you believe the DOJ’s accounting of things then there is some land in Florida I can sell you. Have they released the video footage from the multiple cell phones they probably collected, to the public? ( They probably won’t, why?)
How did the other girls not “hit her” if all the other accounts indicate that they jumped her? Sorry, but that isn’t possible unless they didn’t jump her and all the other accounts which indicate they did, are false.

I don’t know what a typical sentence would be for someone driving drunk and killing another person, but that seems less intentional than this. I hope they at least get the maximum allowed and then for probation afterwards they should have to give speeches at middle schools and high schools about the horrific consequences of using your fists on another person. And what is it about girls fighting all the time? My high school senior told me that every fight he has seen at his school in four years has been between girls.

Thanks guys, for always reminding me how naive I am :P. Amy needs to not have died in vain. Something needs to change. At the very least, I hope some mom somewhere is telling her daughter to not fight instead of telling her how to always stand her ground or whatever it is that happens. Looking up Chapelle skit now.

They will infringe on the bill of rights and the constitution but both sides of the aisle have to be honest and have difficult conversations….

This reality continually arises. People of Native American bona fides support the Redskins. Accept it and move on.

Let’s focus our energies more constructively. On student achievement, which is where we still fall far short of everyone’s expectations. 50% of grade level is NOT acceptable. 100% is the only acceptable answer.

The question is. Will the Red Clay school board continue to honor recommendations from the proven non creditable mascot committee?, Or will they use the many pages of research sent to them reflecting mainly opposing opinions? And Will they ignore the new poll finding “9 in 10 Native Americans aren’t offended by redskins name” ? Thats a lot of denial of facts. The question is. Will this board of education make an uneducated decision?
