Councilman George Smiley is an idiot re: school taxes /DuPont

New Castle County floats $7.5M DuPont contribution  Xerxes Wilson, The News Journal

All properties added together, the company paid a total of $1.8 million in property taxes to the county and $5.3 million to the four school districts last year.

Smiley said the incentive package is preferable to revaluation of property taxes because it spares school budgets harm and is for a short period of time compared with a property tax reassessment, which could reduce tax collections for decades.

“Spares school budgets” Doesn’t this dip-shit know school taxes are levied by school districts via referendums and in case of votechs by state legislation. The county “only” collects school taxes and CAN NOT USE THOSE FUNDS! The county has no authority to reduce any school taxes!

Wouldn’t is make sense to eliminate the gross receipt taxes for all business except Mike Ramone’s 😉   But anyhow !!!!!!!!!!!!! Tom Gordon pulled Jack Makell sorry ass out of the fire and you’d can bet Markell will milk it as his doings !

  1. Double Ramone’s taxes… not just keep them..

But to the point of your article, whereas it is true that referendums determine the amounts of assessments per dollar value, that dollar value is still determined by the county assessment office.. If they lower the assessments of Dupont properties say by 50%, then that would lower the amounts being given to the schools because those lower assessments would be from what the school referendum taxes would draw……

Smiley is saying that the incentives which do not lower assessment values, is better in the long term over dropping property values as an incentive to keeping Dupont here.

Very true!. Also, many people forget or don’t know, once a charter organization purchases existing property that property becomes exempt from school taxes. So your factor in the loss of school taxes to the district within, that district gets screwed big time! Because the have to give many portion of local taxes to the charter schools. So at the end of the day, the districts pay more.
