The Academic Achievement Award is to be given to the schools with large portions of low income and poverty children, who have excelled in closing he achievement gap.

This year it goes to the Charter School of Wilmington. Why? To keep the wealth among the wealthy? To keep the money white? Who knows?

The reward is $50,000 and the Chief of Change by making this choice is saying, that high poverty schools do not need the money until they first perform, and if such money were ever placed there it would be wasted.  Only rich, wealthy, affluent administrators actually know how to “properly” use money, and only the crisp top echelon can ever be trusted to administer it.

    This is just disgusting. How can they possibly justify this? Where are the checks and balances here? I think my opinion of this state and its leaders has just hit an all time low. Let’s just go ahead and announce next year’s winner…Tower Hill.

      Well, maybe, just maybe, instead of whining to the heavens about the low income or racially disabled students they suffer with, consistently producing results in the negative direction, harming kids instead of helping them like every other capital S State run school in DE, maybe, just maybe, they actually ” … excelled in closing he achievement gap.”

      I’d bet my hat that’s what they do every day, nonsensical awards notwithstanding. When RCCSD or CSD or whatever district can produce ANY winners (kids I mean), then complain away, Kilroy denizens, complain away.

      Or how about this? Who else entered the “contest?” If you are Appoquinimink and 99.9% of your preferred minorities are worse off academically today than yesterday, how do you enter the fray? What do you put on your application?

      If you believe that the school is acting inappropriately, please provide compelling evidence of its inappropriate actions. The school is open about its academic program (challenging) and it has way more applicants than seats. The application process and the use of priority preferences is very clear on that school’s website. Have you even read it? Really?

    • Hank, Of course I have. I fully understand preferences and the charter school law. I just object to the results. Skimmed pools of kids and the leftovers behind.

      You spout choice as the panacea for education, but it’s only working for SOME of the choosers.

      you just don’t get it, particularly when you are THIS conflicted about the school in question.

    • “whose most exceptional talent is skimming the most able students” – I would like to know exactly what this means. If a school or district has the attitude that the incoming students are the ‘less able students’ does that equal setting a low bar for them? Might not this lead to the biggest issue (in my opinion) of social passing? If a kid is able to sneak through the system in the earlier grades (that’s where the bar needs to be raised, in the lower grades first in my opinion) and then it eventually catches up with them when they are older and realize that they really don’t understand most of what they are reading in half or more of their classes, they become unmotivated to even go to school and start to lose hope for what they might do with their future..

    • I don’t see how bringing kids back from charter schools would fix this. Matter of fact, it’s probably why most left the traditional schools in the first place.. although some on here still say it’s because we’re racist.. I always wonder if people who call racism are actually the racists.. why else would that always be the first thing that comes to their mind? hmmm
      (disclosure :P, I didn’t leave traditional schools because I thought the bar was too low, I left because of busing.. and not because I didn’t want my kids ‘in the city’ or ‘going to school with black kids’ it was because it would have been an extremely long day for my then 10 year old and I heard other parents talk about things like the crime that was so close to the school, also it was only to be for two years, I didn’t like the idea of having to switch schools every two years)

      I know you made very specific choices. The argument continues to be best for some vs. best for all. Using state money in two segments has zero demonstrable efficacy to provided best for all.

      I believe that if state funding is used it needs to serve ALL children in Delaware, not just some whose parents make a choice for them. Moving monies out of the system, non stop for the last 18 years has clearly not made the totality of DE schools better. That’s fairly indisputable.

      It has created islands of isolated excellence and dire poor performance. It has created the zip code destiny, those in the charter movement claim to be the worst notion ever.

      How ironic.

      It also does not help, that EVERY chance she gets, the DE Charter Network executive director, puts her foot in her mouth and shoots down her own schools while simultaneously clamoring for the unfettered exchange of autonomy for accountability.

      They have none, accountability that is. It’s clear as day.

    • John I think you missed my point… if a district assumes the kids there are the ”less abled” kids, does that mean the bar is set low for academics and discipline?
