A little Red Clay School Board Election History Lesson

Historically female candidates for Red Clay School Board beat male opponents. The data supplied by the Department of Elections for New Castle County supports this fact. Only once since 1999 a male candidate beat a female candidate and that was in 2009 with Jack Buckley in a four-way race with two other males and one female. However, Jack Buckely loss his board seat going head to head with a female in 2011. Check the data for yourself

My guess as to why females outperform males in school board races is because traditional its the moms who attend PTA\PTO meetings and for the most part serve in PTA\PTO leadership positions. Odds are moms trust moms and that gives females the edge.

I wonder what the percentage of female voters there are in contrast to males voters (school board races)?

  1. I did the numbers on that ratio last year, going back to 2008–it appears (allowing for names that I could not definitively categorize as male or female) to be about 55-58% female and and 42-45% male.

I actually attribute part of that to who drops off and picks up the kids at school during an election day as one of the big influences.

Probably the same person who has to rush home and cook dinner :)

Polls don’t open until 10:00 am so it would be an after school or right before picking up kids.

I just read a recent flyer from a candidate (female) and it has a little picture of note paper titled “Mom’s to do list” gotta use that girl power :) Kilroy Gold Star for creativity and emphasis my point.

  3. It troubles me deeply that men are underrepresented. We need to stop all elections until we can fix this problem because it is quite clear that the Red Clay School Board is skimming the cream. And we men apparently are crabs in a bucket or some such. Time for somebody to bitch slap somebody, no doubt.

    Am i doing it right?

  4. Ah, Newark Dad, you have arrived. The only thing missing is . . . an elipsis.

And if you know what that means . . . you’re officially a blogger.
