Nationalized Standardize Test for America’s students! Wall Street wins!

DCAS, Another Test Has Been Added in the Spring! from blog Red Clay Now

In the spring, students will take the test two times in Reading and Math and their highest score will count. If your child receives a Performance Level 4 the first time taking the test and you do not want him or her to take the test a second time, please contact your child’s guidance counselor.

DCAS as many of you know is a growth model test. Students tested in at the begining of the school year, the middle and the end. It helps teachers identify students academic weaknesses and provide intervention. But I just wonder, is that intervention more about passing the the DCAS test than a broad well-rounded education. HOWEVER, get readying to say goodbye to DCAS as we know it because  Goodbye DCAS and hello Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium! That Common Core Standards Governor Markell ordered without legislative approval comes with a nationalize standardized test. Folks talking about narrowing the scope of education and teaching to the test, I think we’re almost there on a countrywide format. So much for local control and hello to federal intrusion. Let’s just call it NCLB on steroids!

  1. The testing is out of control. Schools are consumed by test scores. In middle schools and even grade 9, students get double classes of ela and math and lose valuable learning in non tested areas. In preparing for testing, students are taken out of classes to attend several test prep sessions. If a student misses the 3, they will be taken out of classes again for more test prep. When taken out, these students miss assessments, information. In some cases they are in danger of failing the course, some even the year. Another teacher questioned this (by student request) but was chastised for not being a “team player.” Do parents get it? Do you want your kid prepared for standardized testing or aware of other subjects? Please know in the buildings teachers do speak up, but you must demand the quality of your child’s education. Flexibility shouldn’t just be allowed at charters and charters shouldnt just serve one group of kids. However, I beg for change from within but am now sending my kid to a charter. DOE, let public schools serve all learning, not just race to the middle. Supers, value and empower all paths. Stop with the threats schools will be closed, you are doing this on the kids time. As a parent, I have lost trust in the adults decision making. As a teacher, I know I can make a difference in the classroom. That difference should translate to dcas BUT even beyond. That is an education, not a score.

  2. Wall Street wins? Don’t think so, but either way, these tests are a joke. “Just teach English and Math, so what if they are dying of diabetes because of no physical education, at least they’ll be able to pass the test or not count!”
