Delaware DOE Dan running scared

A little DOE mouse tells DOE Dan is worried that if Kilroy gets his way re: digital recordings of local school board meeting online that pressure would be put on the Delaware State Board of Education  to record their meeting and put online.

I am also being told that Delaware Governor Jack Markell is concerned that if board meetings were digitally recorded parents, community and state legislator may have TMI on available. Markell claims to be big on open government but it appears that was just campaign babble.

To all state legislators reading this, think about how you can go online and hear school board meeting recordings. Don’t you think it would help you be better informed as to what’s going on in education and the school district you live in? Don’t you have an obligation to know  the local issues? Go read the online printed school board meeting notes. They are vague and offer no in-depth information. Many parents and community leaders step up to the microphone during public recognition. It’s time to let them be heard.

Red Clay is using a digital recorder and there wasn’t any need to upgrade the sound system. I hope Merv will step up and ask the Red Clay board to move forward and put the recordings online. If not, I hope the Red Clay school board steps up and takes the action to make it happen. Each school board member ran for board claiming they are for transparency, accountability and open communications. So I just ask that they help delivery their promise and honor this request to put board meeting digital recordings online.

Don’t let Delaware DOE Dan control local boards by urging supers to resist move district communication forward.

Jack, you have the executive power to make it happen! Help let the sunshine in!

Wow, look what this school district did! http://www.retn.org/programs/june-8-2010-meeting

  1. DOE Board meetings makes the theatre of the absurd look sane. The members are only informed as to what DOE want’s them to know and when someone begins to actually ask question’s the gavel comes down and they break for a recess.

Ironically the liberals never ask for the meetings to be recorded.

We need this to happen because the big F U that DOE gives to so many will at least be on record.

    • Sadly the supers are making the request to their boards on behalf of Markell’s puppet show.

“Ironically the liberals never ask for the meetings to be recorded.”

The know good paper trails leads to the truth and in this cas audio is just as good. I’ve been too “many” school board meetings over the years and there is a wealth of good information not gettting out to parents, community and legislators. Also, with my own ears and surely it won’t be documentated, Dickinson STEM will only cost the district $100,000.00, the rest federal! BULL !

We need to realize Jack Markell is DEDOE and all that goes on is by his command. Minner just threw her desires in like SEED and Minner reading and math teachers but didn’t micromanage to the extream Markell is.

I swear if I don’t see board meetings recorded on the web by Christmas I will personall come in with a recorder!

  2. Since this is the most important thing we do –teach the kids – and it is the most expensive thing we do – spend money to teach the kids – then sure as shit these proceedings should be fully accountable to all via the 21st Century digital recording.

    • You got it 21th Century! Jack Markell aka The Nextel Kid knows this process is a cake walk. If I have to record the meetings myself I will and I’ll get some “good sound bites”

  3. The RTTT money is distributed on the basis of poverty level — districts with higher poverty levels get more of the money. Isn’t this what you want, kilroy — lower socioeconomic students getting most of the money and higher socioeconomic students getting less??

How can you complain about Delaware getting more than $100 million extra for education?? Markell has done more for Delaware in his short time in office than Minner did in all the time she was there: Boxwood is coming back, Delaware City refinery is coming back, UD is getting the Chrysler facility to expand educational and research programs, and Delaware is getting over $100 million in new education funds. Not bad, huh?

Yet, all you can do , kilroy, is demand that school boards record their meetings and put the recordings online. What a total waste of time and money, and what an ultraboring product it would produce!

    • Its not about the money! There is money in the system that is being mismanaged and wasted. Red Clay’s $300,000.00 to Teach for America is a classic point. I was told the TFA is being paid for with “federal funds.” That’s not the point the money is being wasted.

“lower socioeconomic students getting most of the money and higher socioeconomic students getting less??”

They don’t get the money as the money being used for their benefit is back filling local and state budgets. The state and districts have a leagal and moral obligation to educare children. What about all the money going to speical needs students that don’t benefit higher socioeconomic students. It’s about moral obligation not the money and funding needs to go towards need.

Why are we adding more administrators and managers with “supplemental” funding? Isn’t education about instruction?

Markell supports feel good laws such as waviers for the class size cap law. Makes it sound like we have smaller class size but we don’t. Choice schoo, here is another feel good law. The state legislators didn’t fund transportation which locks out many poor students. Neighborhood schools another joke! Does Red Clay have a traditional middle or high school in the Wilmignton neighborhoods? Why are poor minorities riding busing longer than the more Affluent ?

GM Boxwood! Hello, GM closed under Markell’s watch. Why didn’t he make a deal to bring the Volt to Boxwood. Futhermore, without federal funds like over $500 million there would be no deal. It was Joe Biden who pulled off that hat trick but some how Coons, Carper, Castle and Markell ride on the DC coat tails. Chrysler ! How many manufacturing job is the U of D bring? And if U of D has all this money to purchase that plant and expand why are we providing state funding to the U of D.

“What a total waste of time and money, and what an ultraboring product it would produce”

The money spend at U of D Arsht Hall re: private party for Arne Duncan on the 23rd could have purchased many recorders. As far as cost to upload that thats about 30 seconds.

Why do you oppose expanding meaningful information?

Makell has done nothing for Delaware’s public school and will leave a worst mess that Carper and Minner combinded. To Minner’s credit she did add more teachers but again funding wasn’t sustainable.
